Lake Angitola
an oasis, is located in the territory between two municipalities of the Vibo Valentia province: Maierato and Monterosso Calabro. It was established in May 1975 and received recognition for “Wetland of International Importance” as a habitat for waterfowl, according to the Ramsar Convention, within the first 10 years.
The symbol of Lake Angitola is the elegant Great Crested Grebe, a typically water bird that built his first nest in Calabria in 1982. Besides the Grebe, you can see the chubby Tufetto; the majestic flight of herons; the dark and noisy coots; the elusive moorhens; or the large and diverse group of ducks, with the aid of binoculars and an expert guide.
As well as, some lucky visitors who will see the Osprey, plunge to find food. The oasis is also home to stretches of the Mediterranean maquis, with a predominance of cork oak, the fragrant myrtle, the Erica arborea, the arbutus, cistus and the thorny.
Recently, reclamation has made a long path through the pine forest that ensures a pleasant walk through the landscape of rare beauty and harmony.
